Black Redstart

These days when I see a new bird (to me) in the neighborhood I get really excited because most of the times I get to see the same birds like Jungle Babblers, Purple Sunbirds, Mynas and the like. I had to ask about this one at Indiamike. So now I know what a Black Redstart looks like. Next time if I see it, I will try to click a better picture.

  2. Yes Chitra, only it was not posing well for me.

Anu bird names are a mystery to me too 😀

Tarun but this one was not willing to pose, managed these blurred shots with great difficulty.

Dehradun it was quite suspicious of me!

Ramesh with a zoom lens it is not very difficult.

  3. Hi Mridula,
The bird – Black Redstart – is a Winter Migrant. There are 2 subspecies, this one is the Phoenicurus ochruros ‘rufiventris’.
Stays b/w 3000 – 4000 feet in summers and comes down in winters to less than 1400 feet; which Kanpur, UP is. I located it near an open field in outskirts of Kanpur today (30th Oct-2011). There was a pair. Its the first sighting this year among local birders. Probably feeling a bit hot in Kanpur (temperature today morning around 15 degree) and so was taking a bath in a collection of water. Got those pics too.
