When we were planning our journey to Bangalore by train in December 2008, a frequent consideration was to ‘save’ time. I think it is a common tendency of almost everyone to try and ‘save’ time. I wonder what do we all do with the saved time! This occurred to me for the first time when I was writing a short post on the Bangalore train journey for CLAY.
The biggest advantage of traveling by the Rajdhani Express to Bangalore, is the time saved (though I wonder what we do with the amount of time we try to keep saving, sometimes it feels it is better to spend that time on rain, rather than in my mundane activities).
So what do you do with the time you save?
Im extremely restless and impatient..so cant deal with long train journeys..as for time I save -I would rather blog, write, sleep or read…
God is kind. I have Time & Time.:)
Good question. We need to take a moment to “stand and stare”, learning from W.H.Davies’ poem, and not rush about so much!
The time I save… wish I could invest it in some bank and take it back later when I need it.. with interest of course…
I normally do not carry a watch while traveling. 🙂
Now that sounds like good use of time Lakshmi.Hobo, that is the way to be!Bindu, I agree with you completely.Shrinidhi, you not planning to do an MBA?Ajeya, now I wish I could do that.
hehe – fantastic question! I suppose its less about the actual time we save and more about the thought that you have time in your control, and the endless “potential” to do more in the saved time.
i was just remembering Mrid, once Morarji desai was asked “how do u pass time?” he shot back. “Why should i pass time, it will by itself.”” how ya like that?
N. I had someting like that in mind when I wrote this post! Thanks for sharing that Ramesh.
:)well – i am also grappling with this issue of ‘endless potential’ aspect of time… most often , i plan so much and do nothing. hoping to let go this 2009.let’s see!
Good question, Mridula. As Ms N rightly points out, it is not that we want to ‘save’ time, we just hope to channel it in our own ways.Contrary to what many feel, I think that traveling by train is in fact a great way to “save” time. Many of the activities (reading, and perhaps even mobile blogging) are very much possible on train journeys. Fans of Paul Theroux should consider checking out “Ghost Train to the Eastern Star” in which he extols the virtue of train travel over flying.
N. I am as fascinated with saving of time aspect as you are!Ramesh, thanks for sharing your thoughts and the book recommendation. I like train travel for that matter even flights because I am forced to spend some time with myself!
