Markha Valley Trek, Ladakh, India

Posted on June 10, 2005April 18, 2025

I will be doing the Markha Valley trek in Ladakh (India) this June. I was searching google to see what others have to say about it. From the number of travel tour operaters offering the Markha Valley trek it seems half the world would be doing it. I hope it is not going to get crowded even there. But, maybe I am getting worried needlessly. Crowd in Delhi is one thing and it should mean something else altogether in Ladakh. At least that is what I hope for.

The idea of the trek, for us, is to escape the crowd which we find in plenty almost everywhere in India. After all we are a country of one billion and NCR itself is one of the most densely populated areas in India. No wonder on every holiday that I take the primary consideration is to run as far as possible from the crowd and Ladakh does seem very far away.

I am a bit worried about high altitude sickness though. The more I read about it the less sense it makes. Will I get it? Only time will tell. But whatever I read it sounds scary. But we are going to take it slow so hopefully we will be able to avoid it.

Still, the thought of sleeping in a tent again and living right in the middle of nature’s splendor for at least fifteen days does manage to sooth my worry ridden mind. But the question is for how long after coming back from Markha and Ladakh? I hope for a long long time, till I find more peaceful employment. Boy! if you have stayed in a bad job you will probably understand what I mean. My parents tell me that even as a child I would never say I am sick so I won’t go to school. But these days every morning I think I am sick … and I want to bunk work.

PS. The picture is from 2016 trip and of the Indus river near Leh. I lost a lot of old pictures and have used replacements in some of my posts.

Madhur, work for a European company rather than Indian or the US ones :0 That is how my husband manages to take leave. Otherwise work in academics like me :)Paavani, I have a strong desire to back to ladakh again, let us see when that happens.
