Batal, Spiti

Beautiful Skies from Batal in Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, India

Spiti is one of my favorite favorite regions in Himachal Pradesh in India. For most, Batal is a pit stop at the Chaha Chachi ka dhaba but we have been lucky to camp at Batal. And what could be more appropriate but to remember such beautiful places at the start of a new year!

Another year is here with new possibilities. I have two major chunk of leaves, one in the last week of January and another in the last week of March. I am already planning for the January vacation though I have not been able to finalize it. It was for March I was thinking hard and then I decided I am surely going to trek, where I do not know as of now. I was looking at my Chandratal pictures and that made me long even more for a trek.

There is something about staying in a tent that makes me so happy. I guess it is not so much about the tent as much as about the surroundings with the peace and quiet that comes along with it.There was  big group of foreign trekkers that had camped in the same field at Batal and yet it never felt crowded. You can see how tiny my blue tent looks in this vast open space!

Stones near Chandra River, Batal, Spiti

The sky at Batal did put on a show for a few hours. Before and after this evening all I got were grey clouds. Chandra River was a short distance away from our Batal campiste. And the smooth stones on the riverbed held a fascination both for my nephew and me. We walked by the river collecting stones for quite sometime.

I usually stay away from deciding what is good for others, but if I could make one recommendation to everyone, it would be to try trekking once. I love it so much that I am sticking my neck out for it! If you like walking and don’t get too bothered about staying in a tent, you should try trekking. I mean I do not believe in travel will set you free theory but the closest I ever came to believing it is on a trek!

People who cannot walk or do not like to walk, are not going to enjoy trekking, that goes without saying. But even then, you never know unless you try! For me places like Batal are solace from everything that is ordinary, it is my beautiful escape!

  1. Wow! 2 trips in planning! I think it’s a great beginning!
Hmm, I am sure I would enjoy trekking a lot because I love nature. I had done one day trekking to some local hilltop temples, forests and waterfalls in my childhood. But, I am not that physically strong like a sportsperson and my body may not respond well to a trek like that you do. No worries! Reading travel posts is equally enjoyable for me 🙂
    TC! Keep smiling 🙂

  2. Sometimes, even with thousands of faces around yourself, you feel the quiteness and calmness. I can relate to this feeling, when encountered with those foreign faces. 🙂
