World Environment Day

Posted on June 5, 2015April 12, 2021

I feel every day is environment day. But then 5th June is dedicated as the world environment day. As a person I feel I do very little. But then whatever little I do, I am going to talk about it. But what worries me more is that I do not know what more can I do.

The most obvious thing to do while staying in a hotel is to place the ‘do not change the linen’ card on the pillow. Ditto for the towels.  Another obvious thing is to use the smaller flush button whenever possible.

I am  big fan of public transport. I am big fan of Delhi Metro too. I use local buses, even the most rickety ones. I use shared jeeps, I will take a train but I do fly as well!  And I am not even thinking about giving up on flights. I have seen very little of the world.

Nature is Home

At home I have small patches of land which I have crammed with trees and plants. I am actually scared that a few of them will crumble the boundary wall! And I bother my family members no end to water the plants when I am traveling.

I use  a bucket and a mug to water the plants rather than a hosepipe. I use the discarded RO water to wash the clothes. I use the vegetable peels in the garden.

I am after my daughter’s life if I see her wasting water while brushing her teeth or washing her hands. In fact I do the same with my niece.

I am known for refusing polythene bags at the places I shop regularly.

I firmly believe in the Gary Snyder quote “Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.”

But in the end my list looks so haphazard and insubstantial. And this when I have been lucky to trek in truly beautiful places and enjoy nature!

Do share your everyday environment tips, so that I can use them too. And do a better post the next world environment day!

mridula! I somehow don’t like the concept of “so & so day”. This is a concept which somehow seems to be developed by vested commercial interests to sell & promote their products/brands. After all, how can making a change just for a day make any difference (sticking to our habits, rest of time)?
Unless, we are mentally prepared to undertake changes & pains for general good, its not going to add anywhere!! In our country, not only ignorance but pains involved in making changes are big bottlenecks.

Nice thought process mridula.. im an environmental planner by education n environment safeguard specialist by profession and i keep telling people that ‘environment’ is way more than trees flora n fauna…it is an integral part of our living…..it is how we build our road, worksite safety, plant site environment health n safety…n because we do not take all of this seriously.. we suffer…just look at the simlle way a pavement is laid in delhi… all the construction material dumped right on roads, dont they add on to the dust (rspm) in the air…. so why dont the public (we ) object to it.. why dont we ask for proper ehs procedures for those…..

i cabt give u any tips coz in my profession….i talk n practice it day in n day out…so ny tips will run into pages… 🙂

You are definitely working for environment. It is not necessary / not possible to be on the road for “save environment” for everyone but if individual takes care of his side of environment , we do not need to say “save environment.

A nice post and a strong message for the environment day Mridula. It is not just for the day, there is a lot to be done through the year, through simple things and simple activities and these certainly go a long way .. I have been a fan of the Delhi Metro too 🙂

If all of us do a little, things may change. However, not much is going to change unless a complete lifestyle change is done. I think genie is out of the bottle, it may not be possible to put it back.

It’s lovely to see that a frequent traveler like you is also a green traveler thinking always about the small ways in which you can make a difference to the environment. Your love for nature shines through in all your blog posts Mridula! Glad you wrote about World Environment Day. I was just too sad about how terribly neglected the environment is by most people, to actually write a blog post. Cheers
