The Great Hong Kong Adventure: A Tale of Passports, Luggage, and Mischief

Posted on May 28, 2025May 28, 2025

I took Chhavi and Vasu to Hong Kong in 2014, their first ever international trip! The main attraction was of course Disneyland! So here is a collaborative post by Chhavi and I which will cover our trip in parts. This is the airport part and Chhavi goes first!

So, let me take you back to when I was a bright-eyed, seven-year-old adventurer. The year was 2014, and there I was, eagerly waiting for my passport to finally arrive. It was a momentous occasion, and little did I know, it would lead to one of the most hilarious trips of my life to Hong Kong!

My mom had been patiently waiting for my passport, and once it finally showed up, she was ready to whisk us away on an exciting trip to Hong Kong. Of course, she wasn’t going alone. My sister Vasudha and I were tagging along for the ride. Now, picture this, two kids and one determined mom about to take on an international journey. What could go wrong?

So, off we went to Delhi Airport on August 14, 2014, with our bags packed and a lot of excitement in the air. And here comes the fun part! You see, my mother had this very unique way of referring to Vasudha and me. She loved to call us “luggage.” Yes, you heard that right. We were her luggage—her ever-adorable, never-staying-still luggage. And boy, was she right about one thing- we were definitely trouble waiting to happen.

At the airport, we could barely keep our excitement in check, and while Mom tried her best to get us checked in, we were off doing our thing, running around like little tornadoes. Sadly, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t exactly check us in like luggage. Imagine the scene, two kids bouncing around, and Mom just shaking her head, calling us “luggage” as we caused chaos all around.

Once we finally got through all the formalities (and, well, eventually behaved), we made our way to the food court. Now, I know what you’re thinking, we were probably starving after all that airport drama, right? But nope. We piled our plates with a mountain of food, and yet, we barely touched it. Typical us! Food was always just an excuse to sit down and have a laugh while our mischievous little brains were already planning the next big thing.

Now, let me pass the mic over to my mother, who, in her own words, can tell you more about this crazy experience.

Ah, the airport. I don’t remember much about it except for the fact that I had two kids acting as if they were made of pure mischief. Chhavi and Vasu, or should I say, my luggage, kept me on my toes the entire time. They didn’t take initiative in anything except causing mischief.

I had always wanted Chhavi to travel young, but when her passport arrived, I was faced with the daunting task of taking two kids on an international trip, alone. Yes, me. The only adult. But I did it! And looking back now, I realize it was both brave and a little insane. But, then that’s what mothers do!

And look even after 11 years, we have such a bundle of memories of our trip to Hong Kong!
