As a part of the Skoda Yeti ROWE trip to Gir, I attended a Siddi dance performance. It was fascinating to say the least. Also I was not aware of Siddis or for that matter Maldharis before this trip. I am sure you can guess from the picture that I am not much of a dancer. Actually whenever I can’t escape I just go and stand there and then run away after a while. Also the person holding my hand was a thorough gentleman, knew my mood perfectly well and let me go at the lightest tug of my hand.
Here is a video for you of the actual dance. It was held at night hence apologies for the low light, however you can still enjoy the music.

Nice one! I had heard of the Siddi’s, but never of the Maldharis until we bought a bilingual book on Gir for Samhith. Get it for Chhavi.. am sure she will love it, esp since u have now visited the place…. it is called Lions of Gir and is published by Tulika Books…
Thoroughly enjoyed the drum beats and dance. you appear shy in that photo:)
thank heaven it is not jhinga lala..(jst kidding) and no offence to any particular community..
Pity many of them has to face discrimination even after they have fully amalgamated into indian culture…see the drumbeats…not totally african or the leg movement…
Never heard of this type of dance till now…still not clear about this school of d, not that i understand dance of any other type either:)
Nice pic.
Thanks for the book recommendation Anu, will look into it.
Chitra, I guess I am not much of an extrovert!
Tarun, I will not recognize African leg movements 🙁
Sanand I am in the same boat. 😀
