Sidu/Sidhu- Himanchali Dish
I have talked about this heavenly Himachali dish Sidu before but it is a sacrilege that I never posted a picture of it on my blog. Actually I got comment from Dilliwala on India Mike and my blog about Shringi Vatika and that prompted me to search for a picture of Sidu on my blog. Then I realized that even though I have talked about it, I never actually posted a picture. And even though the dish looks like the Holi sweet Gujhia, but this one is salty and tastes heavenly. Let me see if I can go back there once again!
So, is it simply the salty version of the gujhia?
whats the filling ma’am? :-/
Salty? how? what do they fill? It looks like करंजी – a snack made of coconut and sugar syrup in Maharashtra. image
Looks like Calzone to me!! Interesting how the world cuisines have so much in common…
No Sidhu, it has a filling that has a greenish color and some dry fruits but beyond that I don’t know.Poison as I was saying I am not sure and I am no cook really.Priyank, that looked like gujhiya, the pictures I mean.Sujata what is Calzone? And thanks for dropping by.
Calzone is an Italian dish, you can say it is a folded over pizza. It is usually stuffed with cheese, sauce and toppings just like a pizza.Nikki in Az!:)
Sujata, thanks a lot for letting me know. If I get a chance I will try it.
Sidu is traditionally made with flour (like dumplings) – inside – its lined with poppy seeds, while a paste of garlic cloves, cumin seeds, green chillies, salt, fresh coriander and mint is applied on it. The whole thing is folded and sealed and then steamed. I have tasted another variation during winter where minced fat is used inside which helps to keep the body warm.
Cheers!
