It is almost time to let go of 2014. It has been a good year for me. So to sum up my travels for this year I continue with ‘if you have to pick up only one picture’ series. Only I am posting 10 pictures this time as I do need to warp up the series today! The first ten trips of the travel 2014 are covered here and here.
Pragpur (with Judge’s Court, Himachal Pradesh)
Pragpur is a small little town in Himachal Pradesh. Judge’s Court is a family run hotel there. The place so reminded me of my railway childhood home. My father retired from railways sometime back. Before that we used to live in a fairly large home with litchee trees (among many others) in the compound. This scene was so reminiscent of my childhood days when eating litchees from the tree was a norm.
Chandratal, Himachal Pradesh (Personal Trip)
The trek to Chandratal was certainly one of the highlights of this year. I do not know what is wrong with me but unless I walk for a good many kilometers (about 14 in this case) in a day every year, life feels pretty incomplete. My elder nephew was with me on this trip and it was after a long time that we traveled together. The younger brat and I have traveled much more with each-other.
Thailand (with TAT New Delhi)
This was trip number 2 of the total 3 trips to Thailand this year. Friends on Facebook have mentioned that it must be like my second home! I do like going back to Thailand so much. It is a very special place for me.
Bhutan (With Makemytrip)
Bhutan is an absolutely gorgeous destination. I fell completely for its charms. It is tranquil and it feels as if I stepped back 50 years in time! The people are gentle and gracious. It was also special because I could trek on this trip as well to the Tiger’s Nest monastery in Paro. I am certainly going back to Bhutan some day.
Hong Kong (Personal Trip)
Hong Kong was truly special because it was the first trip abroad from both these brats. It was so much fun. They didn’t know I was clicking a picture or else they would have protested. Soon after I took this shot, they wanted to jump in the water below. The elder one told me in all earnest that she knew swimming, so she could jump! They did nothing of that sort in the end.
Gulmarg, Kashmir (With Khyber Resort and Spa)
The first thought that comes to mind about this trip is that I almost got caught in the floods! I was very lucky to get out when I did. Nothing would have happened to me as Gulmarg was unaffected. But the phone lines went down and if I was stuck it would have been very difficult for my family.
Ibis, Airport, New Delhi (With Ibis)
I was not very sure if I should include Ibis as a trip or not. But it was certainly a first when I stayed in a hotel in my own city! Chhavi and I had so much fun together, particularly at the pool! So, I am including it as an outing.
Krabi, Thailand (with TAT New Delhi)
Krabi is a beautiful beach destination and this was my third to thailand in 2014! I have been incredibly lucky to be on this luxury trip where among other things, I had a complete speedboat to myself for traveling to Hong Island!
Jaipur (with Jaipur Marriott)
Even though Jaipur is touristy but I so like the place! And Jaipur Marriott was the touch luxury that made the trip extra special. This trip was quite different from my other trips as the focus was food. The note to self is to know my limits when it comes to how much food I can eat and not get carried away!
Sariska, Rajasthan (Personal Trip)
Sariska was the last trip of the year and the first trip this year when all of three of us traveled together! We hope to improve our family travel record in 2015!
2014 has been an incredible year travel wise and otherwise as well. I do not wish to be greedy but can I please have more of the same in 2015?
I was feeling very grumpy the other day. I don’t know what triggered it. I usually don’t sulk. And yet I sat looking at bright sunshine and sulking badly. After a while my thoughts went to the travels this year and with a start I realized I have seen 5 new countries (obviously new for me) and been on 8 trips abroad to 6 countries in all.
And yet I was sulking! Yes sometimes I do not make sense even to myself. So, here I go and take you along with me to places (not all, only overseas trips in this post) I went in 2014. After all, December managed to sneak in somehow and it is time for musings and remembering.
1. Finland (with Nokia)
Helsinki was a stop over and Levi, Lapland our destination. I have been to Europe before but never to this cold a place. The highest temperature I was 3 degree centigrade in Helsinki, in Levi it was always in minus. And it was so much fun. I had a little more beer and wine than ever before, I discovered the Finnish sauna and I took an icy dip in the freezing weather. And I got a cool phone, Lumia 1020 to keep! And yet I was sulking just a day before!
2. Maldives (Personal Trip)
If I had a lot of money, I would take a vacation in Maldives every year! I liked it so much. Of all the beaches I have seen till now, I found Maldives the most stunning. I never imagined that the water could be this blue, or have so many hues! I am absolutely smitten by the place. At some point or other I want to go back to this unbelievable place preferably with my daughter and niece.
3. Jordan (with Jordan Tourism Board)
Did you see the person and did you see the copyright notice? I really got to click Pope Franics this year in Amman, Jordan and yet I was sulking just yesterday. Jordan was such a delightful trip, one for the special event of Pope Francis’s visit and of course I got to see the gorgeous country too! Dead Sea was an absolute hit!
4. Bhutan (with Make My Trip)
I know I will head back to Bhutan to trek; sooner or later is the question. The tiny neighbor has a special place in my heart, I truly loved it. When you land in Bhutan, you feel you have stepped back in time at least by 50 years. And if you are looking for serenity, you will find it in Bhutan.
5. Hong Kong (with my brats on a personal trip)
This is the most talked about trip at home. The kids never get tired talking about it. What did they like most on the trip? If you thought Disneyland you are wrong, it was the hotel swimming pool they liked most! Kids, only they could come up something like this! Where do they wish to go next? Chhavi has no preferences but Vasu wants to go to Paris (because of the movie Queen) or to Florida and this time you guessed it right, because of the Disneyland. Well, if they study a lot, I might take them somewhere nearby next year too, to a visa on arrival country.
6. Thailand (with TAT New Delhi)
It is difficult to believe that I went to Thailand 3 times this year with Tourism Authority of Thailand, New Delhi. In all I have been to this adorable country 4 times. But it was not a new destination in 2014 as I went there last year too. I absolutely adore the country. And I have so many beautiful pictures from the place that I put it in a video!
And by the time I am at the end of this post, I can’t believe I was sulking so badly that I had to sit down and ponder! If I can do even half of this next year, I would not complain.
I started my India travel blog, Travel Tales from India in 2005. In 2016 I realized Travel Tales from India and Abroad better reflected my writings. I love to walk and ride in metros around the world. I have not been everywhere, I am not even close, but it is on my list. I also quit my job as a professor in 2015, it was a happening year! I did a Ph.D. from IIT Kanpur ages ago!
