Can You Spot IIT Roorkee in the Picture Below?

Posted on September 13, 2007

Maybe you will have to enlarge the image to see IIT Roorkee in this picture but what a shame, the way we deface the public buildings. This was a small hut on top of the China Peak at Nainital.

Ah yes! It is such a shame.More, people dont even resist from scribbling inside tombs – like inside the chambsers housing some tombs inside the Humayun’s tomb, and even the Taj – that is nothing less than sacrilege.

You may not believe this…I found that people had scribbled their names on the skeletons of animals, in the natural history museum at Calcutta!:|

I am Rajveer Sangha, from the 2007 batch of Electrical Engineering of IIT Roorkee. I, and my friend Ayush Khandelwal have scribbled ‘Class of 2007’ on this hut.The hut was just an abandoned building. If it had a historical importance then perhaps they should have prevented it from ruin.In an IIT we are taught to be disciplined and to respect our natural surroundings. And we do that by not throwing Pepsi bottles and Chips wrappers on the mountain trail (I remember Ayush instructing all of us to collect our trash and keep in our bags while returning). I recently went to the Valley of Flowers and I still have all the empty bottles in my bag only! I could not find a place to discard them. I am sure rest of my friends have the same sense of duty, wherever they are.Our institute’s main building is regarded as the most beautiful among all the IITs. It is a Raj era building painted in pure white. So a respect for history and beauty comes naturally to us. This subject is often in a want of an Objective standard to mark out the limit. I agree that its shameful to spoil Qutub Minar, or Taj Mahal, or Ahimsa Sathal. But I don’t find it bad to write on the back wall of a dilapidated hut. When several years later, I go to the same peak again, perhaps with my spouse and children, my happiness and nostalgia shall have no bounds. But perhaps you are bereft of such ‘humane’ emotions. Because you are so busy finding out faults and pondering on the pathetic living conditions in India, that you have lost the point somewhere.I gather you are a PhD and well traveled. A well traveled scholar is broad minded and doesn’t evaluate everything by the same set of rules (written in books!).Why people throw garbage on railway tracks and why they create a chaos on the roads (you are a part of that chaos too!), are questions not to be taken so simply. They way I see it, from what I understood from a famous speech by Indira Gandhi, Human Environment, the ‘Small’ needs of the people need to be satisfied before they can start thinking about ‘Big’ things like Environment Pollution and Global Warming. A scooterist, with a wife and two kids on the back seat, worried about the price rise of onions is less likely to obey a traffic light, or not spit pan on the street than say a Software Engineer riding a plush new car on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. So the question is: Can you help uplift the Human Environment around you? Can you do some good to the country, except clicking pictures and giving your high minded views on the state of things in India?

lol … traveler! Get a life! While I agree that historical monuments are our pride and etc etc … writing something on an old abandoned hut doesnt look that terrible. You will be sad to know that Neil Armstrong left a US flag on the moon upon his visit in 1969. Poor Neil should be kicked hard for this, hmm?

K3w13r if your view is so correct why bother? And thanks a lot for increasing the comment count on this IIT Roorke graffiti post. And a word of caution, any rude comments that follow this would be summarily deleted.

I would have never bothered, had you not named IIT Roorkee. Forget abt wht I wrote, in fact I found your blog to be very interesting and that you have worked very hard for that, I appreciate that. No offense intended. Had I been at your place, after seeing so much of India, I would have reacted in the same way. My petty argument is nothing when compared to what you have achieved…lol. Good Going. Keep it up!
