I spent quite some time inside the Hawa Mahal this time in Jaipur. In this post I bring you the various shapes of the glasses used in the windows and the doors of the palace.
The glasses are such that people from inside the palace can look outside but nothing is visible from the outside about what went on in the palace. This was anyway a light trap, quite high up in the wall.
And here is yet another shape for you. I wonder why they varied the shapes and color or maybe in those days standardization was not the norm?
I only wish the bottom most left glass was not broken. I think I also have a video where I view the city below from the different shades of the glasses. Will post it some day soon.
And even after this set of five, I am sure I have missed out on some colors and shapes.
This was one of the longest post I have seen in your blog. The windows looks really good. Might be the kings used it to stare at the women without letting them know that they are watching them. π kidding
Hey Abhilash this palace was built for king’s ‘other’ women, while his family resided in the City Palace, Jaipur. π
oh! So might be king used it to see whether his family was coming for an audit so he could arrange the things… π
At least we can assume right π
Yes we can assume anything Abhilash! I wonder what future generations would assume about us as a collective?
what brilliant colours..next time Hawa mahal on the agenda…i was so bugged by the touts that I didnt go inside..
good to see almost all glass pieces intact
how lovely! actually you are very observant.. if i was in your place, i would have only looked at the colorful glass and never even have observed there were different shapes π
Lakshmi there were no touts near Hawa Mahal this time, I met only one person on two visits who mildly offered his services as a guide. Maybe the season was not in full swing?
Yes Shrinidhi, only a few pieces missing.
Doli, I thought these patterns were quite in your face π I am sure you too would have noticed, particularly if sunlight was coming through them. π
Very beautiful.
Thanks Celine.
Totally love the first photo! In fact, it is a classic shot! Some work on it and you can frame it π Brings some some great memories.
The other photos look like that of an arcade game. May be the game designers got inspired by the Hawa mahal π
Thanks Sankara, unfortunately I do not use any photo editing software beyond Picasa! In the first picture it is actually Jantar Mantar that you can see!
Beautiful, as always! and really colourful!
Thanks Anu.
colorful pictures mridula. i was in jaipur too last week, but didnt notice these glasses π
But how could you miss it Sandeep?
The palace offers spectacular views. The palace has a dream-like element to it. It gives you feeling that it will vanish into thin air if you close your eyes for a second. Arrive at Jaipur, which is Rajasthanβs capital, to behold this architectural beauty. There are numerous tourist attractions in the vicinity. It has become a landmark of Jaipur. The palaceβs rear side lacks ornamentation and is quite plain.
Thanks Jehnavi for the wonderful description.
